Before use, the mortar and pestle need to be cleaned and cured. First, wash the piece very well with water and a stiff brush. Use uncooked rice, pour it in the mortar and grind with the pestle. Don't worry if it turns a little grey after this first grind. Rinse the mortar. Repeat as many times as needed until the rice comes out white. Rinse with water and leave to dry. Do not use it in the microwave or dishwasher.
