Brown Lidded Sewing Basket

Thoughtfully crafted
Each basket is made by Taste of Turkana, a women’s collective that creates paid work for women in rural Turkana, a semi-arid corner of northern Kenya. They weave with doum palm because it grows plentifully there and regenerates without much help, and the tight weave holds its shape through years of opening and closing. Natural and dyed color leaves wind together around the body, finished with a solid color lid that reads clean and simple next to wood, linen or stoneware. Because every basket is woven by hand, the pattern and the shade of color shift slightly from one to the next, so yours will be the only one exactly like it.
